Background of the study
Political discourse in Enugu is a dynamic arena where language is used strategically to influence public opinion. In Igbo, sentence structure variation is a key element that politicians exploit to emphasize arguments, create persuasive narratives, and differentiate their rhetoric from opponents. This study investigates how variations in clause embedding, word order, and syntactic complexity function within political speeches and debates. Analysis of televised debates, campaign speeches, and press releases indicates that politicians modify sentence structures to suit different communicative contexts, oscillating between formal and colloquial registers (Okafor, 2023). These syntactic shifts are believed to enhance clarity and emotional appeal, particularly when addressing diverse audiences. Furthermore, the study examines the role of bilingual influences, as many politicians blend Igbo with English to appeal to a wider demographic. By employing both qualitative discourse analysis and quantitative coding methods, the research aims to identify recurring syntactic patterns and assess their effectiveness in political persuasion (Chukwu, 2024). The findings will contribute to our understanding of how syntactic variation serves as a tool for political strategy and identity formation in contemporary Igbo discourse.
Statement of the problem
While sentence structure variation is acknowledged as pivotal in political communication, there is a scarcity of research focusing on its specific manifestations in Igbo political discourse in Enugu. Preliminary observations suggest that the use of complex and variable sentence structures may lead to ambiguity or misinterpretation among constituents (Eze, 2023). This study seeks to systematically document these variations and evaluate their impact on political messaging.
